This week the Sevenoaks Society talk will be on “The impact of driverless cars on Sevenoaks”.
The talk will be given by David Gamble, former Chairman of the Society. He hopes to make it an interactive meeting to tease out the pros and cons of this potentially huge change in our lifestyles.
For rail travellers there could be a number of impacts including:
- how much car parking would be required at the station if cars could drive themselves home after dropping off commuters?
- would Southeastern try to recover lost income from car parking by raising fares?
- should Network Rail be allowed to keep the “development gain” through being able to use Car Park 4 for housing – or another supermarket?
- could “shared mobility” reduce the amount of traffic around the railway station?
The talk is at 8.00 pm at St Luke’s Hall, Eardley Road on Wednesday 8 November. If you are not a member of the Sevenoaks Society there will be a small charge of £3.00.
What do you think driverless cars could do for Sevenoaks and for commuting? Let us know here.
I don’t think we will see a significant impact for several years but obviously this is the way to go for the medium-term future and a more sustainable and safer Sevenoaks and for air pollution reduction in the centre.
@Alan Yes, but it’s within the planning horizon for some infrastructure investments – which could take a decade even to be “spade-ready”
For those of us who missed this talk, is there a summary somewhere? Thanks!
@sarah Not seen one – I will ask the Sevenoaks Society!
