Egham puzzler: £40.40, £17.05 or £15.15?

If you’re going from the Sevenoaks area via London to somewhere else in the London & South East Network Area between 0900 and 1000 a through ticket may not be your best option. For instance from Bat & Ball to Egham via Waterloo on the 0921 the train company websites quote you an “Anytime Return” for £40.40. But two off-peak returns (Sevenoaks to Waterloo, Waterloo to Egham) are valid and would cost a total of £17.05. Even better, an off-peak Travelcard and a return from Feltham to Egham would cost a total of only £15.15 – before any railcard discounts are applied.

Delay Repay: sometimes it takes four attempts!

On Saturday 29 June I departed Wareham on the 16.31 service to London Waterloo where it arrived thirty-two minutes late at 19.21. Accordingly, I missed my intended train back from Waterloo East to Sevenoaks. The 20.30 to Bat & Ball was on time, but due to the late running South Western Trains service this was half an hour later than I should have been. Getting the right Delay-Repay has required me to make three appeals. This shows that what Transport Focus and others have been saying about the difficulty of claiming Delay-Repay and the arbitrary rejection or reduction of valid claims is, despite the assurances given, still not being addressed by the train operating companies.

How would you spend £340,000 to improve our stations?

Govia Thamelink was fined £15 million for last year’s timetable meltdown. After work by MPs, local councils and rail traveller groups this has been allocated to stations, for projects to help passengers hit by the collapse in services.

For stations we cover on the Darenth Valley line £340,000 will be allocated to projects that help passengers directly.  Amounts at each station depend on how badly services were affected.

Please let us know what you think? Decisions will be taken end July, and GTR will give extra weight to passenger groups like ours.
