Sevenoaks Fares Comparison 2018
In the February edition of “Live Rail” magazine there is an interesting article comparing rail only season ticket prices around the country for similar distances. The following extract will be of interest to Sevenoaks commuters: –
Journey of about 20 miles
| Sevenoaks – London Terminals | £3,500 |
| Egham – London Terminals | £2,760 |
| Redhill – London Terminals | £2,744 |
| Weston-Super-Mare – Bristol | £1,940 |
| Harrogate – York | £1,640 |
| Helensburgh – Glasgow | £1,576 |
| Southport – Liverpool | £1,133 |
| Coventry – Birmingham | £845 |
Over longer distances Southeastern has particularly high fares. That has resulted in some Hastings line commuters switching to the Uckfield line where fares are much lower: –
Tunbridge Wells – London terminals:£4,644
Eridge – London terminals: £3,000
Southeastern have told us in the past that fares are no longer, as in the days of British Rail, determined just by distance. But it’s hard to believe that Southeastern’s operational costs per mile are four times as much as some other operators, and with commuter trains full and standing where is the money going?

A tribute to the ability of Sir Michael Fallon in standing up for his constituents.
Many Kent season tickets can be significantly reduced by Split Ticketing via New Cross. The annual cost from Sevenoaks to London Terminals (including Charing Cross, London Bridge, Cannon Street, Blackfriars and City Thameslink) goes down to £2940, although this is still extortionate compared to similar commuter journeys elsewhere.
Section 14.2 of the new National Rail Conditions of Travel (w.e.f. 11 March 2018) still confirms that for your split season ticket to be valid, your train only has to pass through New Cross; it does not have to call there.
@gerry Thanks. Perhaps there are split-season options for the other journeys too!
